New Goalie Equals New Hope?

Year after year the Flyers have been a team with great upside, but always seem to disappoint.  Each year they seem to run into the same problem, the goaltending. There is no doubt that the Flyers have had some great offensive and defensive weapons like LeClair, Lindros, Desjardins and Giroux. However, each and every year when it comes down to it, the goalies fail. That is the exact reason why the Flyers went out to bring in the “answer” or whom they thought would be the “answer” Steve Mason. However, it looks like he may no longer be the answer for Philadelphia.

Whether it comes from fans or reporters, there have been several complaints about the performances of Mason over the past year. Though he still finds himself above the league average for save percentage, he has not proven anything to Flyers fans. In the first few games of the year Mason looked awful, allowing 7 goals. Though they struggled in their first two games, it looks like this team has finally found its stride with their new goalie Michal Neuvirth. In his first two games Neuvirth has played unbelievably having two shutouts. The team may have found their goalie to have a successful season. However, it will be a waiting game whether or not the 27 year old can sustain this success.

Though Mason is back from a family issue, it looks as though he will not play. If Neuvirth keeps up with his success in net, we may be viewing the end of Steve Mason in Philadelphia. The Flyers have much to work on this season, but it all starts with the net. Philadelphia fans are sick of seeing the same thing each and every year; it is time for a change. The Flyers need to prove that they can succeed, guys need to start stepping up starting today.

CHIP CHIP CHIP!!!

Chip Kelly is not a genius… Let me state this once again! Also, I hate to break it to you but he is just a normal person, not a god… If you listen to our show you know how I feel about Chip. But, for those who don’t, here is my honest opinion. Eagles fans are way to trustworthy of him. I don’t think Chip has it as an NFL coach to win a Super Bowl. First, before every calls for my head for criticizing Chip Kelly, let me say he is an innovator. Chip has completely changed the way teams think about their players and how to handle conditioning. What Kelly has done to the NFL will be felt for years to come, there is no doubt about that. We have already seen teams starting to take on the Chip Kelly philosophies and buying into the process as a whole. However, even though there are a lot of good things about Kelly’s thought processes, there are a lot of issues.

Kelly is an innovator, he is a quality coach that is truly changing the game. He understands how to make a team a cohesive unit. However, though Chip has changed the game for the better, his philosophy and attitude as a whole has not worked. Making players more athletic and having more stamina allows a team to last longer. They don’t have to out play their opponent rather they just have to out last them. But, this does not make up for players lacking talent. Chip hasn't realized that you can't take any college player and turn them into an NFL starter. The other problem with Kelly is he is only an innovator, he does not evaluate talent very well. Though he has made some moves that have worked, fans are still unsure of the process as a whole. This is due to the fact that Kelly is too quick in his turn over of players. If he doesn’t like you or your attitude, even if you are talented, you are gone.

Though Chip Kelly has great ideas and has completely changed the game of football he hasn’t proven anything to me. Kelly wanted to take control of the player personnel and it has not been a success. The decisions Kelly has made were not the best for the Eagles, though players like Jackson and McCoy have faltered on their other teams. The other players he has brought in have not worked. If the Eagles want to have a successful season, it looks as though they will have to make changes within. The Eagles are a talented team, but Chip Kelly may not be the best coach for the job. Now I know, I may be eating my words at the end of the season. But, still in my opinion a change has to take place starting today if we want to see a team that can be Super Bowl contenders!
