HOT HOT HAWKS!!!

The Hawks came into tonight’s game riding what seems to be an unbelievable hot streak. So far this season the Hawks look like a team that cannot be beat. After their domination of Big 5 teams in the past two games SJU looked to take on UMASS. However, this was a game that was not pretty if you are a Hawks fan. The team did not play well out of the gate, struggling from both ends of the ball. Though they did struggle, the Hawks were able to pull off a big win against the Minutemen to take their winning streak to 6 games.

Isaiah Miles came right out of the gate dominating for the St. Joe’s and he would continue that trend throughout the game. Because of the effectiveness of DeAndre’s play it is obvious to see Miles has became an even greater player, and their all-around best offensive player in the last few games. The chemistry that we see each game between Miles and Bembry became even more apparent tonight. At one point during the game the Hawks lost their lead and began to struggle. However, the leadership combination of Bembry and Miles got the team right back on track.

The main issue that St. Joe’s had at the start of this season was the inability put teams away. Throughout the season we have seen their leads become larger and larger at the end of games. However, tonight’s game was different. SJU never really seemed to get a grasp of the game which made them battle to the end. There is no surprise that the Hawks came out with a win tonight, but the fans wanted to see a better game all-around.

Even though this team did not play as well as they should have, at least we can say they got the win. If we continue to see the great leadership out of Bembry and Miles there is no doubt in my mind this will be a tournament team. The Hawks have to continue playing well if they want to prove themselves. As any fan on Hawk Hill knows we are beginning to get the National attention we deserve. It is time to prove that we are March Madness worthy!

A SPECIAL Season

You know it is a special season when Coach Martelli opens the press conference saying his grandson is now dressing as a player rather than a coach. 

I can officially say that I am impressed. Coming into this season I never thought I would say that, but this St. Joe’s team is good…very good. The Hawks finally impressed me yesterday; they kept their foot on the gas and never took it easy on Fordham. This led to a complete blow out by SJU. The Hawks 14-3 overall and 4-1 in the A-10 puts them in 2^nd place in their league, and I do not see them going anywhere.

This was not a basketball game; this was a complete dominating performance by St. Joe’s. At one put during the game you could here fans even saying that the game was not fair. Early on it looked as though we were going to see a good A-10 matchup, however this was not the case. The Hawks played well to start but they kept allowing Fordham to get back into the game. This completely changed in the 2^nd half; the Hawks DeAndre Bembry took over. Bembry took complete control of the game using not only his scoring ability but rebounding and defense as well.  DeAndre Bembry would leave the game with a double-double and the team would win 80-55. Throughout the 2^nd half it became apparent that Fordham was not going to compete, and the Hawks completely took over.

Looking back at this game, we can say that it is a major stepping-stone for the Hawks. This was truly a team effort, with each and every player getting valuable minutes. There is no doubt in my mind that this team is good and they can compete at the highest level. Looking ahead it should be a pretty easy schedule for the Hawks. It looks as though we may be seeing a tournament team on Hawk Hill. If you are student, there is no doubt that this will be a very “SPECIAL” season.

Back on track?

We are officially three games deep into A-10 play for the Hawks, and we have seen two different sides of the Hawks. In their first game the Hawks played a very strong offensive game against Richmond, however they struggled on the defensive end. The Hawks have shown so far this season that they can put up numbers on the offensive side of the ball but there are still many questions with this team. The main issue that we have seen is the Hawks struggle to put teams away. This can be seen in their latest two games against VCU and Rhode Island.

The Hawks have put up good offensive numbers in their last two games, however they failed to put VCU away and barely came away with a win against Rhode Island. Looking at the game against VCU, the Hawks were winning 72-62 with 6 minutes left. Even though the Hawks had a 10-point lead they were not able to pull off a much needed victory against VCU. That win would have been a very strong one for the Hawks. They had good performances from players like Miles and Bembry. Even though they played well on offense they were not able to pull off the win at the end of the game. If the Hawks want to win in the A-10 they must be able to hold a lead.

Today, we saw much of the same from the Hawks. We once again saw a strong offensive performance from SJU with Bembry putting up 22 and Brown with 19. The team all-around had control for most of the game. However, again we saw a team that could not put their opponent away. The Hawks twice had large runs and complete control but continued to let Rhode Island penetrate the inside. This allowed Rhode Island to get into the middle and keep the game going.  As the clock was running out fans still were fearful that Rhode Island was going to be able to pull the game out. This cannot happen if the Hawks want to win the A-10.

It is obvious going into the season that there were no expectations for this team to truly compete. However, we are seeing a Hawks team better than expected. If they want to compete and if they actually want a chance to win the A-10, they have to put teams away. The Hawks still struggle to put teams away; they come out better and stronger than their opponents every single game. However, it seems as though the team lacks confidence to finish teams under pressure. This team needs to figure out how to use the clock to their advantage and win games.

Chip Kelly Eulogy

Chip Kelly is gone and the Eagles 2015 season is over. The Eagles owner seemed to have never trusted the three-year Philadelphia coach. Kelly is being held completely accountable for the terrible season. The maddening and frustrating season is finally over. It is finally time to move-on.

No matter what your thoughts are of Chip Kelly, do not just talk trash on him because he is gone. I enjoyed his time with the Eagles, but he is dead to me. People forget that Kelly’s ideas are simple, and think he is smarter than he actually is. His whole coaching philosophy is built around maximizing the number of plays. I enjoyed the Eagles being the fastest operating team in the NFL, but there comes a time when the brakes need to be pushed.

Kelly’s criteria for players were too strict. He did not appreciate NFL talent. I am all for having bigger players that beat-up on smaller players, but I would prefer having the smaller player if he is more talented. Hiring personnel with character and teaching skills only works in corporate, not in the NFL. It was great having a larger player like Jordan Matthews as a slot receiver, but I think I prefer Riley Cooper’s personality.  

The main reason why the team suffered this past season was because of Chip Kelly. The team that he created did not have the right personnel, and did not play together. The team was talented, but they did not play like a team. There were wide-open receivers being overthrown and great throws being dropped. Chip fostered a poorly coached team that impaled themselves with penalties.

But, when it is all said and done Chip Kelly is no longer the coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles were not the team every thought they were, and once again the experts were wrong. Chip Kelly will get another coaching job in the NFL, and the Eagles will be successful in the future. However, right now I think it is time to take a step back, and really look at what is going on in the Eagles locker room. It is time for new personnel and players, it is time for a change!

It feels good to be 10-2!

The Hawks have started their season 10-2 and it feels really good to be on Hawk Hill! This team has played extremely well this season. St. Joe’s has truly surprised everyone even gaining 2 votes for the top 25. This team keeps winning and they are in a great position going into A-10 play. Each and every win that the team has this season has been a quality offensive showing. Coach Martelli seems to finally put everything together on the court for this team.

Going into A-10 play the Hawks are currently tied with Dayton for 2^nd and George Washington is a head of them at 11-2. The Hawks were not picked to be in the position that they are in currently, and that is what has been truly shocking. Many fans are still stating that maybe the Hawks have had a much easier schedule than the other teams in front of them.  However, I disagree the Hawks have played extremely well on the offensive side. This team has shown time after time this season that they can score on the highest level. If this team continues to see the leadership from DeAndre Bembry and Isaiah Miles they will be successful. Fans and students on Hawk Hill are starting to believe in the hype of this team.

This St. Joe’s team is in a very nice spot going into A-10 play. The first game that they play in their division is against Richmond. There is no doubt that the 8-4 Spiders are a competitive team. But, looking ahead at this schedule it looks to me like St. Joe’s has a pretty good shot to compete. SJU may have an opportunity to make it to tournament play this season. The Hawks need to keep their offense playing at a high level, and if their defense improves they can truly compete.
