Where It All Wentz Wrong

Carson Wentz could have possibly won both rookie of the year and the MVP in consecutive seasons. Some player named Dak Prescott won the rookie of the year in 2016 and arguably the best quarterback ever, Tom Brady won the MVP in 2017.

Since Wentz tore his ACL in Week 14 during the 2017 season, he has not been the same. Some blame has to be put on the Eagles organization. Even though Wentz was desperate to start, he was not ready. He did not have an offseason to adequately practice for a full-speed NFL game.

Injuries have always been part of the young quarterback’s playing career. When Philadelphia drafted him, they knew Wentz could be injury prone. As Mel Owens said on our radio show said, “If you don’t want to get hurt stay on the couch!” It is perseverance and athleticism that allows him to play again. The Eagles need to take every chance they can to be cautious. In my mind he is not a franchise quarterback yet. He definitely has potential to be a legend, but he has to stay healthy.

The 2019 offseason should allow Carson to get back to his 2017 caliber play. There is a tremendous amount of pressure on Wentz. There probably won’t be an experienced quarterback to back him up if there is another injury. Wentz is arguably not the best quarterback from his draft class despite being drafted 2nd overall. We will be excited for Wentz’s progress throughout the season. He has the skill to prove to be the best quarterback in the league.

Flashback Friday!

Our throwback of the day is when former Philadelphia Eagle and St. Joe’s Hawk Vince Papale came into studio! Vince was very excited to be back on Hawk Hill. Papale told stories about running track at the old Fieldhouse and his time with the Eagles. One interesting tidbit we learned throughout the process was the differences between his story and the Disney movie Invincible. This episode was definitely a must listen!

4 and 5 Birds

Would the real Philadelphia Eagles please stand up…Well, in case you have been living under a rock for the past 2 months the Eagles are 4-5. This record has many Eagles fans scratching their heads, because this team was a “Super Bowl Contender” and Chip Kelly is an “amazing coach.” This team to be frank simply does not have it. They aren’t contenders nor do they show any glimmer of potential. The good news for those die-hard fans that don’t think with the minds, but their heart the Eagles are still in it. The Eagles can still make the playoffs because of their terrible division, which they currently rank 3rd in. But, in reality if Dallas never were affected by injuries they would likely have the comfortable lead in the division.

Now, I will admit Sam Bradford’s play had improved since the first game, as well as the run game. However, the team still lacks skills in major areas like their pass game as well as well consistency with their defensive backs. When looking for reasons why the Eagles have struggled, I think one aspect is clear and that is Chip Kelly. The difference between Kelly and Reid is that Reid was football man. Reid understood the game, and trusted his colleagues. I am not saying that Kelly is not qualified to coach, he understands the game. However, he wants overall control, he wants to make changes that should not occur. As soon as Kelly wanted to be in charge of Player Development, things have gone downhill. This is where the problem lies. The fact that Kelly went 10-6 with players that weren’t “his” proves that he is not as good at evaluating talent as thought. The fact that Chip Kelly cannot win with his “guys” proves that this.

The Eagles may be good eventually, and Chip Kelly may turn out to be a wonderful coach in the NFL. However, it looks like this may not be his time. The Eagles have struggled mightily this season, and have proved time and time again that they do not have what it takes to compete. It looks as though we are looking at another disappointing Eagles team and other disappointing Philadelphia team.

3rd Times The Charm

Even though the Eagles had the same record in the two seasons that Chip Kelly has coached the Philadelphia Eagles of 10-6, they are expected to go into the playoffs with a 12-6 record. Last year, the Eagles two biggest struggles were giving up deep passing plays and turning the ball over. If those two issues are fixed this upcoming season, they can easily be Superbowl contenders.

When Chip Kelly came to Philadelphia, many football fans thought he would take more chances out on the field. The fans that used to watch the Oregon Ducks play under Kelly are shocked that he has not tried to convert on fourth down more often. In Oregon, Kelly gambled on fourth down more often than he has in Philadelphia. The major difference between Oregon and Philadelphia is that he trusted his defense in Oregon. Throughout the two years Chip has been in Philadelphia he has not trusted his enough to take chances.

If the Eagles do not give up large chunks of yards on one play, Chip will be able to trust his defense. Without giving up large plays, the Eagles head coach will be able to take more chances on fourth down. It is a shock that these large plays were even able to occur because of how many times the Eagles’ defensive line rushed the opposing the quarterback. The blame for giving up big plays on defense last year can be put on the terrible play by the corners. The Eagles had three cornerbacks on the field for more than 55% of the plays, and now they are no longer on the team. Without Boykin, Williams, and Fletcher the Eagles should have a secondary that can complement their strong defensive front. After Philadelphia’s new defense learns how to play together, they will hold their opponents to 24 points.

This season, Mark Sanchez is still on the roster, but at least Nick Foles is not. Sam Bradford is now the Eagles starting quarterback. The only reason he was available for a trade from the St. Louis Rams was because he is returning from his second ACL injury. Each time he gets hit, every Eagles fan and person in the organization will be holding their breath.

Bradford should have not turn the ball over as much as the Eagles did in 2014 because there will be less pressure put on him. Previous starting quarterbacks under Chip Kelly constantly had the line of scrimmage moved back because they played alongside LeSean McCoy. McCoy would dance around in the backfield, and then be tackled for a loss.  This season, the Eagles have DeMarco Murray and Ryan Matthews, two running backs that are known for moving the line of scrimmage forward. With the line of scrimmage moving forward instead of backwards, there should be fewer turnovers on offense.

You have to love how unforgiving Chip Kelly is. He is not complacent with the 10-6 record just making or barely missing the playoffs. The Eagles head coach will make any changes. If he does not want a player on the team, the player will no longer be on the team. That is why last year’s first round pick; Marcus Smith has a good chance of getting cut. However, Smith will likely survive because the lack of depth at the outside linebacker position.

It will be shocking if the Eagles do not make the playoffs this year. Going into the season, they are a playoff team, and they have the talent to develop to go even further. The Philadelphia Eagles have a top 5 offense in the league. With the rate that they can score points the Eagles are going to be a team other teams will not want to face.

RGIII Where will he go?

Now seeing RGIII is out in Washington, the question is now raised “what will happen to him?” When looking at RGIII we have seen many ups and downs with his talent. RGIII has given fans and the Redskins many great moments, however it seems as though those days are gone. If RGIII is officially out in Washington, many fans are wondering what team he will end up with. Below we have listed some potential teams that RGIII may end up with.

New York Jets
The Jets are a team that would be most interested in getting RGIII. After losing Geno Smith to injury the team is now looking for a steady starter to fill the role. In reality Geno has not provided the Jets what they wanted, and to solve this problem altogether RGIII could be the guy. RGIII would fit perfect into the Jets offense providing them with a guy that can make the deep pass when needed and get away from defenders. With the Jets newest WR Brandon Marshall it seems as though it is a match made in heaven.

Buffalo Bills
Tyrod Taylor has officially been named the Buffalo Bills new starting QB, but that may not last too long. Even though Taylor is very talented and skillful, he may struggle being a first year starting QB. Bills fans may be worried about how strong his play making ability is and how he will be able to handle the stress of being the starting QB. I am a huge fan of Taylor and would like to see him be given a shot. However, with RGIII now on the market and a coach like Rex Ryan it is apparent that this may be a great team for Griffin. Bills fans get ready for a chance to get RGIII.

Philadelphia Eagles
Why not… Chip Kelly loves a QB that can move in the pocket and RGIII is that guy. Lets be honest Chip isn’t sold on Sam Bradford yet, which means he is still looking for that strong QB. I would not be surprised if RGIII is released and Chip goes after him. RGIII can provide the Eagles with the “Chip Kelly Offense” that they desire. Even though many fans may not agree with this, it is a possibility.

Cleveland Browns

Last but not least the Cleveland Browns have made our list. On the Browns roster right now they have Johnny Football and Josh McCown. Both guys have struggled proving themselves as the teams overall starter. The Browns did compete last season, which shows they have the potential to win. However, they are missing that stable QB. That stable QB could be Robert Griffin III. Looking at the Browns, they need that offensive leader, the guy that isn’t afraid to make the big play. RGIII can be the Browns newest members and can be helpful for the team as long as he stays healthy.
